Why Would I Care About Lisa’s Lips?

Have you seen promos for the reality show Harry Loves Lisa?

Wait, let me rephrase that: have you watched TV Land lately?  Because if you have, then you’ve definitely seen promos for the show: they’ve stuffed them into nearly every commercial break like some kind of cruel April Fools Joke.

The reality show takes a look at the life of married actors Harry Hamlin and Lisa Rinna.  It’s been described as part soap opera, part comedy.  It’s very bizarre, from the clips I’ve seen of it.  (I just can’t bring myself to sit through a whole episode.)

Hamlin is known for his starring role in the cult classic Clash of the Titans and for his role in L.A. Law.  Rinna is known for her roles on Days of Our Lives and Melrose Place.

And for her upper lip.

Twenty-five years ago, she had her lip surgically enhanced, but something seems to have gone wrong, leaving her upper lip noticeably enlarged.

For the run of this series, TV Land has been promoting the fact that during the taping, she made the “personal decision” to attempt corrective surgery to right the wrong from a quarter-century ago.  One promo even featured before and after photos: “You’ve seen the before, and you’ve seen the after.  Now see what happened in between.”  The season finale episode, the one, conveniently enough, in which the surgery occurs, airs tonight.

If I know what happens after, why would I care about what happened in between? That’s a waste of my time.  No matter how much melodrama occurred from the time she entered the operating room until the time her “after” photo was taken, I still know what eventually happened.

So I’d only be tuning in for the melodrama.

Yeah, I know.  That’s exactly why people would tune in.

I think I’ll be popping in an Andy Griffith Show DVD instead.  Good luck to the rest of you!
