Stupid End-Of-World Countdown Now Ticking

We’re down to our final year.

That’s if you believe the foolishness surrounding the ancient Mayan Long Count calendar that signaled December 21,2012 as the end of an era that would reset the date to zero and mean the end of humanity.

This particular calendar began in 3,114 B.C., and consisted of 13 394-year periods called Baktuns. The thirteenth and final Baktuns ends on 12/21/12.

But that wasn’t really enough to cause a panic among doomsday theorists, Yahoo reports. The real problem began with a stone tablet discovered in the 1960s describing the return of a Mayan god at the end of the 13th Baktun. Last month, a second reference to that date found on a brick at another site fueled more speculation — and furor — that the end of the world was coming.

Maybe, on December 22, 2012, all of these people will finally stop peddling their hysteria.

That is something I’d definitely like to see end.
