This week, we’re looking at a familiar item we all use every day: the telephone!
The telephone has changed a great deal since its invention, but at the same time, it doesn’t seem all that alien from its original creation. Technology has changed how we make calls and what we do with the telephone, but it’s as much about communication as it ever was.
But what are your telephone memories?

How old were you the first time you used a telephone?Â
Around three
or four. I was a precocious child with an over developed vocabulary.
2. What’s the oldest phone number you remember from your

that is still a valid number for the same party it was then?Â
The closest would
be my late grandmother who had the same number from pretty much the time I was
born until she went ‘home’ February of 2012.
4. Have you ever used a rotary-dial telephone?Â
My great
grandmother had a rotary phone. In fact, it was one of the old ones that still
had ‘Property of AT&T’ on it. Back when she originally got it, phones were
like our cable modems today. They were actually owned by the phone company and they
would replace it if it broke.
5. What year did you get your first cell phone? Â
2003. It was around Thanksgiving. My wife and
I were driving around and realized that there was no way for the day care to
get a hold of us if there was an emergency. We had our first cells phones
before the sun set. They were a pair of Nokia’s that shocking did nothing more
than allow us to talk to each other. I’m not even sure if they had texting yet.
6. How many cell phones have you owned since then?Â
Five. Which if you do the math is pretty much a new phone every time my contract came up since that original.Â
From that
Nokia, I switched to a flip phone. The flip phone became a Blackberry. The Blackberry was replaced by the original Droid (although I REALLY wanted the Droid R2D2 I couldn’t afford it). The Droid got updated to an HTC Incredible. The
Incredible lived up to its name until it was replaced by a Motorola RAZR. Once
this phone is up, my next target is a Galaxy S 4 (or 5).

2. My first one. My mom had that number until I graduated from college.
3. That’s more difficult. Most people don’t have home phones anymore.
4. Yes, of course.
5. Probably 1996. I was in college.
6. Many. Probably a dozen?

1. Just a few years. Apparently I loved dialing random numbers.
