This week, the Saturday Six celebrates a milestone I could have never imagined: its 500th edition.

When I started the Saturday Six back in 2004, I had two ideas in mind: I wanted to give readers something fun and interactive and I wanted to help them find other blogs to read.

I figured that by virtue of people coming here and leaving links to their blogs — whether they answered the questions here or there — readers could check out a new blog they hadn’t visited before or reconnect with one they might have failed to visit for some time.

By my crude math skills, 500 editions of the Saturday Six would translate into 3,000 questions over the past nine years. If you’d have told me back then that I’d have to come up with that many, I might have said there aren’t that many questions.

If I’m honest, I am the first to admit that there’s a mathematical certainty that I’ve asked the same question more than once before. There are probably a few questions I’ve asked (perhaps in different ways) three or four times across these 500 sets.

I’ve got a good memory, but the collection of every question I’ve ever asked hasn’t made its way into there, yet.

That said, I tried to assemble a group of really special, thought-provoking questions for this week’s set. I hope you enjoy them and thanks for being here for the 500th edition!

Here are this week’s “Saturday Six” questions. Enjoy!

1. Think of the thing you fear the most that has stopped you from doing something you’ve wanted to do. Without revealing the fear or the action it is stopping, how long have you allowed that fear to get in your way?

2. Of the people who’ve had the greatest impact on your life, which one would you most like to have the greatest impact on?

3. If you didn’t know how old you truly were and someone asked your age, based on how you feel about yourself and society itself, how old would you think you were?

4. A quote attributed to Bruce Lee tells us we should “Be happy, but never satisfied.” Are you often more happy or more satisfied?

5. If you had a close friend who spoke to you with the same intensity and criticism you used when speaking to yourself, would you want that friend to stay in your life?

6. You are invited to speak at a graduation ceremony and give advice to the students, but you are told that because of the sheer number of graduates, you’ll only have 30 seconds to speak. What important advice will you the graduates in those 30 seconds?

Thanks for playing this week’s Saturday Six and I hope you’ll be back next week!

  • Well, I may be late, but let it never be said I did not get here at all.

    1. Well, I have no trouble saying it: I had a huge fear of speaking in front of multiple people. But eventually – in my 30s – I had to get over it to do orientation meetings among other things in Human Resources. It was sink or swim, and while I hated doing it, at some point, it became part of my routine, and I got past it. I even managed to make it fun and interesting, although that took quite a bit longer.
    2. Goodness. That is a hard one. But I would say it was my last manager, the GM I worked for at my last job before I retired. He really had a huge and wonderful impact on mine.
    3. Hmmm. Physically I look around mid-30s. Chronologically I am 45. Mentally, I have to say sometimes I feel like I’m 15 (ignorant) and sometimes 85 (weary) and well, who knows? But how I feel physically is 90, thanks to being permanently disabled (you see where I would prefer to say “retired”, as that sounds better).
    4. It varies. I guess having stopped working, which I miss terribly, I am more happy at this point than satisfied, as I no longer contribute to something that I loved. Well, two things – my paid work as an HR Manager, and my volunteer work as an EMT. I loved giving back something and more often than not just feel as though I am a drain.
    5. Absolutely I want friends who are as blunt and honest as I am. I don’t care for people who don’t say what they think, whether it is warm and fuzzy or negative. It is not fun to have to guess what people are thinking.
    6. Live life to its fullest. Go out there and live every part of it – work, play, relationships, etc. as if it were your last day – no regrets, no worries, just do it!

CONGRATULATIONS to your 500th Saturday Six – you certainly have had a very positive influence on me as well!
