People We’ve Lost (So Far, That Is)

Last Updated on February 12, 2022

It’s that time of year again. Unfortunately.

TV Squad just published its list of notable deaths that occurred in the show business industry in 2009.

This is one of my biggest pet peeves, year after year.

Not because we should forget that we’ve lost these people we’ve enjoyed and admired, and this year, there were big names like Michael Jackson, Walter Cronkite, Bea Arthur, Patrick Swayze, Dom Deluise, and Ricardo Montalban.&nbsp  But what should be an obvious problem is that&nbsp  2009 isn’t over, yet! A lot can happen in three weeks.

As I pointed out at TV Squad, just last year, Eartha Kitt died on Christmas Day. And like years past when a notable passed away after a list was published, someone had to go back in and edit.

I understand the desire to get stories out there as news slows a bit near the holidays. But if we’re really interested in getting all of the year covered, it’d be nice if we wait until all of it actually happens first.

  • It took me a minute to realize they were only listing TV-celeb deaths. When I scanned the list and didn’t see John Hughes I was this close (you can’t really demonstrate “this close” in writing, I know) to posting a comment about how incomplete the list was. Whew.
